The Q&A Archives: Vegetables for Container Growing

Question: I am interested in growing a container garden on my apartment's patio. I have three half barrels and am interested in starter vegetable plants that will grow well in this environment? Adrienne Broadnax Lexington Park, MD

Answer: Most vegetables can be grown in containers except perhaps corn and vining squash, but I think even these have been done by fanatic gardeners. For just starting out, I'd suggest tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, carrots, beans, zucchini and bush cucumbers. In three 1/2 whisky barrels you can fit one tomato, pepper, cucumber or squash, 6-8 lettuce heads and plenty of beans. After one crop of lettuce or beans is finished, consider growing another. Have fun!
