The Q&A Archives: Watering Poinsettia Plant

Question: How often should I water my poinsetta plant?

Answer: Unfortunately there is no "rule of thumb" I can give you. Poinsettias need to be kept moist but not sopping wet while they are in full "bloom" so you will have to check the soil with your finger and see how long it takes it to dry out. The frequency will depend in part on the size of the plant in relation to its container (a large plant in a small pot will dry out faster than a small plant in a larger pot), in part on the soil mix the grower used (for example, some mixes drain faster than others, some may have a water holding polymer in the mix), and in part on the temperature of the room where you are keeping the plant.
