Beetles On Cypress - Knowledgebase Question

I have Leylandii cypress that have the tips(6-10 ) inches falling off due to little black beetles that bore in causing the tip to die. I have removed the live beetle with a pocket knife and have even found a single larvae in the branch. What is the pest and how do I control it?

Without actually seeing the critter, I'd only be venturing a guess as to its identity. Here's a comprehensive website with descriptions and pictures of common bark beetles. Perhaps the pests in your cypress are here:
