| I have a green house with 6 mil plastic covering and heated. Is it practical to start most or all of my vegetable and flower seeds in this type of grrenhouse in zone 5/6, given that many of the plants need to be started in Jan. and Feb. when there can be extreme tempurature variations. If so, where can I get more info on this subject? |
| The answer to your question will depend on the heating costs compared to the retail price of the plants you would start plus any value you might place on the "entertainment" of starting them or the ability to have exactly the varieties you want. Many home gardeners find it is more efficient to start seedlings in the house under fluorescent lights and then move them to a cool greenhouse later in the spring when the winter has abated somewhat adn they have begun to take up more room. Your local power company should be able to help you calculate the heating costs based on average winter temperatures in your local area. Your local County Extension (461-1000) may also have some useful information on seasonal greenhouse use. |
