The Q&A Archives: Mesquite Trees Hardiness

Question: What is the scientific name for mesquite tree and its extreme temperature requirements?

Answer: Prosopis is the genus name for mesquite, but there are many species, with different ranges. Some of the species are extremely hard to tell apart, even for experts, because they hybridize readily and can look quite different depending on cultural conditions. However, most mesquite do extremely well in the desert Southwest. P. chilensis/Chilean mesquite or P. alba/Argentine mesquite are two common trees that nurseries carry. Sometimes they are sold as P. hybrid 'Thornless South American Hybrid.' Both are hardy to 18 degrees F.
