I live in Northern New York State. I have three potentilla bushes that need pruning. When is the best time for this and how much should be pruned?

Potentillas need an early spring pruning to remove any winterkill and generally tidy them up. Taking off about a third overall will encourage branching and make them look thicker later in the season. After the first flush of bloom they may be trimmed lightly to encourage further blooming and maintain a tidy look.
