The Q&A Archives: Moldy Bare Root Asparagus

Question: I recently received Burpee bare root asparagus in the mail. There is mold on the roots. Should I plant them or send back for another set? Does mold hurt the root?

Answer: If the roots of your asparagus seem mushy and soft and if you break one and notice the  insides are gray and also mushy, then they probably have rotted and you should return them. If  not, just wipe off the mold and plant once you can easily work the ground.
