The Q&A Archives: Mounding Dirt Around Potatoes

Question: We have some potatoes that are about a foot tall and I was wondering how high I should mound the dirt around the plant to get more potatoes. I would also like to know how far I should put the dirt around the plant. Thank you!!! Please answer back soon since I hope the mound the dirt tomorrow. Alex Odessa, FL

Answer: You can mound the soil around potatoes right up the the top few leaves. If this is the first mounding, then you can also mound them again once the potato stems are 6" tall. Mounding helps stimulate the roots to send out more side roots, thus creating more potatoes. Keep the well weeded, watered and watch for potato bugs and you'll be eating fresh potatoes soon.
