Cultivating is the process of breaking up the soil surface. This process aerates the soil, allowing the soil to warm earlier in the spring and dry faster in wet weather. Whether you cultivate by machine (rotiller/rotovater) or by hand (spade, fork or other handtool), the end result is the same - a more hospitable place for plants to grow.
