The Q&A Archives: Non Intrusive Ivy

Question: What is an attractive ivy or tall climbing vine which would look nice on a brick classical colonial home and would not damage the new brick?

Answer: Ivy is ivy; tough, tenacious, and generally invasive. I'd settle for something a little better behaved, and I'd erect a trellis or other support, to keep aerial roots and exploring stems from getting a good hold on the brick and mortar of your house. A trellis will also allow air to circulate between the vine and the brick, keeping the plants healthier and the brick cleaner.

Wisteria is a good choice, as are honeysuckle, clematis, or jasmine.
