The Q&A Archives: Too Much Unwanted Fruit

Question: We have 4 crabapple trees that produce nice pink flowers that later produce zillions of small crabapples that are almost impossible to pick up and make a mess all over the place.

I don't want to cut down the trees so what else can I do to eliminate the problem crabapples?

Answer: Unfortunately, the blossoms will normally result in fruit on healthy trees. You might consider relocating the walk or patio or whatever functional area is affected by the falling fruits, or possibly try setting out a layer of netting to make picking them up simple once they are down -- the netting catches them and can then be dragged and rolled to maneuver the fruit for disposal.
