Does this sound absurd if I ask if our cut Christmas tree could be planted? Is it possible for us to begin root growth?

I have heard of cases where holiday trees have somehow managed to grow some roots into their "vase" water, but unfortunately it is extremely unlikely that a tree could grow enough roots that way (or in a soil mix) to be able to sustain itself in the soil outdoors.
