We have a 17 year old Norfolk Island Pine that is over 7' tall with branches over 3' long --it has taken over the room. Can we trim those branches back? If so, how short can we make the branches.

Unfortunatley, this plant really resents pruning of any kind. In my experience the best you can hope for is to slow down its growth by fertilizing it a tad less so it is on a "maintenance" diet. If it is a life and death matter of "smaller or be gone", you could try nipping off a portion of each of the new growth tips when they appear.
