The Q&A Archives: Gopher Purge/any Herbal Uses

Question: Does Gopher Purge (Euphorbia lathyrus)have any herb like value for uses such as green tea or as an additive in food preparation. Do you know of a website that will give detailed information about this plant.

Answer: The majority of euphorbias (also referred to as spurge) are extremely toxic and not commonly used; in fact many people suffer a severe skin reaction from contacting its sap alone. For a historical look at uses for some types of euphorbia you might find the old fashioned herbal by M. Grieves interesting. See the listing for Caper spurge at for her description of its uses. However, I would strongly advise against eating it in any way, shape or form!
