| My wife had amaryllis in her office for Christmas and instead of throwing them out, she brought them home. At work they bloomed, but to make them easier to bring home she cut the bulbs back and took them out of the pots. Now I have them laying on the kitchen table. Please help me because the bulbs are big and they look like they could make nice flowers next year. |
| What a great find! Usually the post bloom procedure is to trim off only the bloom stalk and then continue to grow the bulb as a foliage plant so it can rebuild its strength to bloom again. I think you should repot them as soon as possible (leave the top third of the bulb above the soil line) into approximately six inch pots and try to get them into active growth. After that, put them into the normal care regime of strong growth from bloom until they take a rest during the fall. To do that in October simply withhold water and allow the leaves to wither, keep at a cool temperature (say 50 degrees) for about 8 to 10 weeks. Then bring out into the light and warmth, water lightly once and wait for growth to resume. Good luck with the bulbs! |
