| I am an extremely inexperienced gardener living in Southern California with all this terrible clay for soil. However, I recently bought packages of the following vegetables to plant: Sweet 100 tomatoes, bell peppers, variety of gourmet lettuces, sugar snap peas, spinach, and cucumbers. When is the best time to plant? I tried to calculate by the map on the key at the store, but it was very unclear. Please advise. Thank you! |
| You can plant lettuce, snap peas, and spinach now. All of these veggies grow well in cool weather. The tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers need long days and warm weather in order to mature. Wait until late April to plant these crops. If you stagger your planting, sowing seeds every two weeks, your crops will mature at 2-week intervals, helping you extend the season and allowing you to enjoy fresh produce over a longer period of time. Be sure to prepare the soil well by adding lots of organic matter, and choose a sunny site for your veggie garden. Good luck with your new garden! |
