The Q&A Archives: Spacing Requirements for Vegetable Favorites

Question: What is the spacing between these plants, tomatoes, green bell peppers, iceberg lettuce, and watermelon and also the specified lighting (sun) requirements for best results. Thank you for your time. Chris Waterbury, CT

Answer: All vegetables grow best by getting as much sun as possible. Another condition is whether they like cool or warm conditions: lettuce grows best in cooler conditions and tomatoes, peppers, and watermelons prefer warm growing conditions. For spacing, watermelons need space and grow best on hills 6-8' apart. The other vegetables when grown in rows, spacing between plants: tomatoes when staked-18-24" when not staked 30-36" bell peppers 12-15" lettuce 12-15"
