The Q&A Archives: How to Plant Onion Sets

Question: How deep should onion sets be planted?

Answer: If you are planting on light to ordinary soils, position the set so that just the tip is exposed above ground. If the soil is heavy, allow one-third of the bulb to sit above the soil. If you want scallions, bury the set 1/2 inch below the surface. Space sets 3 to 4 inches apart in rows or beds, or, for scallions, 2 inches apart.
