The Q&A Archives: Minimum Height for Raised Beds

Question: What is the minimum height a raised bed can be to acheive all the benefits of having one? This would be for growing vegetables. Susan Berg Rockbridge, OH

Answer: I'd say the raised bed if built on concrete or non-porous material would need to be 10-12" high. If you're building it in a garden, then 6" high is probably fine. Remember in the garden, unless you have some type of supporting materials, the bed will eventually flatten out over the growing season.
