| Plumeria, or Frangipani, is one of the easier plants to propagate from cuttings. At this time of year you'd take hardwood cuttings (last year's growth), allow to callous over, dip in rooting hormone, then plant in potting soil in the spring with the buds begin to swell. Hardwood takes longer to root than softwood, which is gathered in late spring and early summer. If this is your first experience in propagation, you might want to wait until spring to take your cuttings. If you're anxious to get started, you can take hardwood cuttings now. Take softwood cuttings during the active growing season, taking soft, succulent, flexible new growth. Cut below a leaf, remove lower leaves dip cut end in rooting hormone, then plant in moistened potting soil. Maintain high humidity by placing a plastic bag over the cuttings and container. Ventilate once each day by removing the plastic bag for a few minutes, then replacing it. When new growth forms on the cuttings, it indicates they have rooted and can be transplanted into their permanent places in the garden. Good luck with your new plumerias! |
