| Last year we began a garden at our elementary school. It was a huge success and also a lot of work!!! This year we devised a "Garden Advisory Committee" where the students are actually doing the planning and leg work. We need to begin our plants indoors and were wondering if we could start "root" vegetables in peat pots. Last year we started tomatoes, peppers, beans, peas etc. in peat pots but were concerned about potatoes, radishes and the like. Any suggestions? |
| In my experience most root vegetables do not transplant well so they are not usually seeded for transplanting, although it's always worth a try. Radishes grow so quickly and in such cool temperatures that they do not really need to be started indoors where space is usually at a premium. You might consider starting plants such as carrots in a large deep tub or half barrel set on wheels if you are bound and determined to start indoors. Potatoes can also be grown in interesting ways such as inside an old straw bale or perhaps using a large tub into which additional layers of cover are added as the plants grow and could later be moved outdoors. With some creativity I'm sure you can come up with some interesting ideas to experiment with. |
