| Since they grow and mature relatively quickly, most annuals have a preferred season or temperature range. This means they tend to do better in either warmer summer temperatures or the cooler seasons of fall and spring. You might try some of the heat resistant violas or snapdragons which are very cold tolerant and yet do manage to bloom somewhat during the summer and then come back strong in the fall. Make sure they are planted in rich moist yet well drained soil and mulched. They will bloom better in fall and spring if located in full sun, but may perform better during the heat of summer in partial shade or morning sun. Finally, regularly removing the spent flowers (deadheading) will help to extend the period of bloom as will an occasional sidedressing of compost and/or a balanced fertilizer and of course, a steady supply of water. |
