The Q&A Archives: Germinating Last Year's Seeds

Question: Last year I ordered several vegetable seeds from Burpee's. However, I was unable to plant them. On advice from Burpee's I have been storing them in my refrigerator all winter. Before I plant them this year is there anything special I need to do? Sally Sutter Lancaster, OH

Answer: Just soak the seeds in warm water for a few hours before planting and they should grow fine. Most seeds will germinate okay if they are one year old except onion, which loses vitality quickly.
