The Q&A Archives: Source for an Olive-Size Pickling Cucumber

Question: My grandmother raised a type of gerkin in the 1960's that was about the size of a large olive, with spines. She pickled them with garlic, dill and hot peppers. I cannot find a gerkin like this in any catalogue. Please help. Debbie Kovacevich Jewett, TX

Answer: Any of the Burpee pickling cucumbers can be harvested young (even the size of an olive) and used to make gerkins. 'Burpee Pickler' is a good variety harvested at any size. If you like older varieties, try the 'Vert de Massey' in the Burpee heirloomcatalog. (1-800-888-1447).
