| Peonies are propagated by division of an older plant. In the fall, prepare the site where the new plants will be located, because the divisions should be transplanted immediately. Dig up clumps, and cut them with a sharp knife into pieces with at least 3 "eyes" each. The "eyes" are "buds" or growing points on the crown. Replant the divisions at least 3' apart, with the eyes no deeper than 1-2" below the soil surface or they won't bloom. Native to China, peonies don't enjoy being moved, so when you plant them, make sure they are in a permanent location. They will thrive for years without any need to divide them. Wouldn't it be nice if all perennials were so easy-going!?! |
