The Q&A Archives: Bloom Cycle for Oriental Poppy

Question: If I plant some perennial seeds such as Butterfly weed, Aubrieta, Evening Primrose, and Oriental Poppy, when will they bloom? I read on the package of Oriental Poppy that they won't bloom until next year. Is that true? Joy Dorsey Lithonia, GA

Answer: Yes it's true. Those and many perennial flowers if started from seed may not bloom the first year. You can be patient and wait until year two, or buy plants that are started and ready to go at a local nursery or through Burpee.
