John,

Use a trowel to make a vertical hole in the soil. Set the plant in the hole so that the roots are oriented downward, not in a ?J? shape or twisted around. Firm the soil in around the roots to remove air pockets. Make sure the soil level comes up to the middle of the plant crown, that is, in between the part of the stem where the roots attach and the part where the leaves emerge. Water the plant in well and keep evenly moist as it begins to establish and grow.
