Some gardeners swear by buttermilk, others by yoghurt, some by a mixture of moss mixed in a blender with either of those. (This may ruin your blender if there is grit in the moss.) Still others suggest painting on a slurry of soil and/or manure and water. To be honest, in my experience simply setting them in a shady spot and filling them with soil and plants and watering them all summer will produce lovely results. The moss seems to arrive all on its own when conditions are right.
