The Q&A Archives: Flowers that Attract Beneficial Insects

Question: I have read that a certain variety of marigolds is beneficial to plant near roses that have aphids because the marigolds will attract ladybugs and hover flies. Is this true? If so, what type of marigold? I've read that it is Tagetes, but aren't all marigolds Tagetes? Is there a certain variety I should look for? Thanks. D. Conti Fairfax, CA

Answer: Marigolds and many other flowers will attract beneficial insects to the garden. The best types to grow are the species marigolds such as the French marigolds (Tagetes patula) and African marigold (Tagetes erecta). Check the following company for these types, Seeds of Change P.O.
