The Q&A Archives: Groundcover that Tolerate Foot Traffic

Question: Is there a ground cover that will choke out grass, and can be walked on? Ed Halterman Santa Maria, CA

Answer: When they invented lawn grass, they had a great idea. Something green and alive that could be walked on! They've yet to find a better one! Any groundcover you grow will not tolerate the foot traffic that lawn grasses can. You can grow purple vetch or Bishop's Weed, that will crowd out anything, including lawns, but they aren't really for walking on. I'd say get a tough lawn grass such as turf-type tall fescue or buffalo grass, that can grow well under foot and not be such as chore to maintain.
