I have about two dozen pods from an active trumpet vine that bloomed wonderfully this past summer. Now i would like to plant the seeds in pots and start new vines.
What is the proper procedure to do this, i.e.,
size of pots, type of potting soil, feeding, and when to plant them outside (at what stage of growth)... or any other information you may be able to assist me with.
Thank you so very much for any informtion.

According to Michael Dirr's "Manual of Woody Landscape Plants", seeds for this vine (Campsis radicans) require a cold period of two months at 41 degrees before they will germinate. (Usually it is a good idea to plant them where you want them to grow in the fall.) To do this now, set them in a plastic bag of barely damp soilless mix in your refrigerator, or plant them in pots of soilless mix and leave them outdoors in a sheltered location. This second method is easier because they should germinate on their own next spring. If the ground is not frozen where you are, you could also plant them outdoors now in the spot where you want the vine to ultimately grow -- that would be the easiest of all!

Since they may be a bit difficult to transplant, I would suggest planting a few seeds to a four inch pot after they have gone through the chilling period. Any soilless mix should be adequate. Dampen it slightly, plant the seeds and cover the pot with plastic wrap. Set it in a bright location out of direct sun. Once the seeds germinate immediately remove the plastic and set the pot in bright light. Once the weather begins to warm, move the plants outside gradually so they can acclimate to the weather. Once "hardened" plant them in the garden.

While they are growing in the pot, wait a few weeks and then use a water soluble fertilier at about a quarter strength according to the label instructions.

Good luck with your seeds!
