I'm a novice gardener. I would like to start out with something small like a window planter. Are there any small fruits (strawberries, etc.) that I can grow in a container?

You could certainly try the alpine strawberries or everbearing strawberries in a window box planter. That is the only fruit I can think of for such a small container although you could also try the smaller ornamental peppers and many herbs in a window box. You might want to take a look at a book or two about container gardening to help you get started. One I particularly like because it is so straightforward is "Container Gardening for Dummies" by Bill Marken, ISBN0-7645-5057-8. Have fun with your new hobby!
