The Q&A Archives: Seed Starting

Question: When do you start vegetable and flower seeds for zone 5?

Answer: The answer to your questions depends on what you are growing and when your last average frost date is. Your County Extension (734-4453) should be able to tell you the frost date if you don't already know it. Most seed packets will tell you approximately how many weeks ahead they can be started indoors. They will also tell you when to plant the seeds outdoors in relation to the frost date. Most things are generally started between ten and six weeks before the last spring frost if you start them inside.
