I am looking for several perennial bushes - also a climbing vine - which would do well in Zone 1 in a dry sandy soil. What do you recommend?

A vining plant worth consideration is Calylophus hartwegii. It has flowers which resemble evening primrose, and is a hardy, vigorous climber.

You can grow Buddleia (Butterfly Bush), Caragana arborescens (Siberian Peashrub), Caryopteris clandonensis (Blue Mist), Ceanothus (Wild Lilac), and Arctostaphylos (Manzanita) in your zone 1 garden. Each of these plants will thrive in full sunshine, in dry, sandy soil.

Be sure to provide regular water during the first growing season until the plants become established. After that, occasional watering during the hottest part of the summer will keep your plants happy.
