I planted mums this fall in place of old shrubs we dug out. There were beautiful all of Sept Oct and Nov. Now in Jan they are brown and I want to cut them off so they will bloom again next fall and was told to keep them as fall bloomers I need to pinch off the buds this spring. Do I just cut off the dead foilage now or wait till spring? |
It's always a good idea to remove spent flowers and folige at the end of the season. Here's how to care for your mums: After bloom, cut the foliage down to about 8 inches from the ground. In the winter, cover the plant with sawdust or mulch. In the spring when new stems just begin to grow, dig the entire plant and divide it so each of the new stems has some roots attached. Plant these new divisions and they'll each grow into a clump of chrysanthemum plants. You can do this over and over again until you have no more garden space for chrysanthemums! |
