The Q&A Archives: Resources for Azalea Care

Question: What is the best reference for the care of Azalea bushes? We have purchased some land that has overgrown azalea bushes and they need some tlc. How do I do this? Thank you! Andrew Norman Richmond, VA

Answer: Azaleas like shade, acid, humusy soil, and moist, but not flooded conditions. They are an understory bush, so do best planted along tree lines, under large trees or on the north sides of buildings. Contact the Virginia State Extension Service for information on growing azaleas in your state. Ask for the publications department. They usually have pamphlets for growing all kinds of plants. 804-524-5961
