Answer: Sounds like the berry patch is thriving! You'd be better off dragging the old plants out by their roots than trying to cut them down and keep them cut down. As long as the roots remain in the ground they'll send out new shoots.
Once you've cleared the area you can grow all kinds of interesting berries. Try Meeker, Chilliwack or Summit raspberries and Triple Crown or Arapaho (both thornless)blackberries.
