Wood ashes can affect soil pH and may be available for free, however their effect will depend on what type of wood was burned and will also leach through the soil fairly quickly. If you use wood ashes you will need to test your soil more often and apply the ashes more often. Lime may seem expensive at first glance but it does last for a number of years in the soil so its annual cost is fairly low. It is also predictable in its effect.
