Why do people say putting cut flowers in water mixed with a lime carbonated substance such as slice is better than just plain water?

The soft drink contains both acid and sugar. Acid retards the growth of bacteria and sugar provides nutrients to the flowers. You can get the same results by adding one teaspoon bleach and one tablespoon sugar to one gallon of water and using the mixture in place of plain water in a vase for cut flowers.
