I live in what is considered Zone 1 in the Sunset Western Garden Book. I would like to plant a conifer (preferably some type of pine) which is fast growing and will serve as a privacy barrier. The soil here is sandy and we live at the 5,000 ft. elevation. I intend to water with a drip system. What are the fastest growing conifers for my area?

Most cold-hardy conifers are slow growing so your choice is limited to Coulter Pine, Afghan Pine or Pinus contorta (Beach Pine). Once the trees are established they are reasonably drought-tolerant, requiring only supplemental watering during the hottest months of the year.
