The Q&A Archives: Dividing Bearded Iris

Question: I live in Zone 9, Barstow, CA. I have clumps of bearded iris bulbs which need to be separated. Is February too late to do this? I have planted bearded iris bulbs even later than February and they have bloomed.

Answer: Bearded iris can be moved any time during the growing season as long as you don't mind risking the blooms. Traditionally, these iris are moved about a month after they bloom but early spring is an okay time to move them, as is summer or even early fall. I'd go ahead and divide them now.
