I have a lace cap hydrangea in an 8" pot. It had a large flower when I got it. The flower has died and dried up. I cut only the flower off, and all the leaves dried up and fell off. It is now shooting new leaves. Should I plant this outside or is it a house plant? Our winters can get to -20 below (northeast Nebraska). The plant guide was unclear as to whether it can go out in this area. Thank you for your help. |
Lace Cap hydrangea has two kinds of flowers in a single blossom. The tiny flowerets in the center have both male and female while the larger petaled flowers on the edge are sterile, but serve to lure pollinators to the center flowers. The plants grow best in zones 4-7 and the flower buds are hardy to about -10 so it may not bloom reliably in your garden unless it's planted in a protected spot. You can try planting it next to the foundation of a building for winter protection, or you can keep it indoors during the winter months, taking it outdoors during the spring and summer months. |
