How and when do you prune Chrysanthemums to grow them as hanging plants and what type of chrysanthemum works best for this?

There's only one chrysanthemum with a trailing habit that would be suitable for hanging baskets. It's C. pacificum, also known as Gold and Silver Chrysanthemum; unfortunately it's prohibited in many areas because it's host to a fungal disease called white rust which can infect many other plants..

Instead of chrysanthemums for your hanging baskets, why not consider cascade petunias, lantan, lovelia, scented geraniums or nasturtiums? You can promote new stems and flowers by pinching the plants back early in the spring and occasionally during the growing season.
