The Q&A Archives: "L" Shaped Seedlings

Question: Why do my broccoli seedlings grow in an L shape instead of growing straiaght up? I have started them indoors under fluorescent lights. Georganne Price Glouster, OH

Answer: From the growing shape you describe it sounds like you have the growing light too high above the seedlings. As seedlings are getting started the lights should be adjusted to about 2-3" for the first two weeks and then raised to about 6". If you have them in an area that receives outside light they could be growing towards the sun light because it's stronger. You can remedy this by planting the "L" a little deeper in the soil to keep the plants growing upright. They'll still produce well.
