There are several ways plantings can help reduce energy use. For example, shelterbelts or windbreaks help keep buildings warmer in winter, shade helps keep them cooler in summer. A paved surface will reflect a great deal more heat than a planted one, so this can work both ways depending on the season. Recent attention has been given to planting on flat rooftops as well. Nearly any plant can be used with energy use in mind as long as it is suited to its growing conditions and purpose.
