The Q&A Archives: Shade-tolerant Vegetables

Question: Are there any fruits or vegetables that tolerate slight shade (5-6 hours of sun) and still produce heavily?

Answer: If those hours of sun include noon, most vegetables should be fine. In partial sun, many vegetables will still grow although they will be less productive than they would be if grown in full sun all day. If your spot is truly quite shady, you may find that the cooler season vegetables such as peas and greens as well as some of the herbs such as basil, chives, and parsley as well as alpine strawberries do best. In my experience it is always worth an experiment to see -- you may be pleasantly surprised.
