The Q&A Archives: Some Vegetables for the Shade

Question: About 1/3 of my vegetable garden plot is in full or partial shade. Could you please recommend some vegetables that would do well in those conditions? Thank you. Irene Huang Plainsboro, NJ

Answer: You will have to experiment but you have some choices to try. Leaf crops, like lettuce and spinach, are the first choice. They should do alright. Next try root crops, if they get partial morning sun they could be sucessful. Most fruiting crops like potatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and tomatoes need at least 6 hours of sun light to be sucessful.
