| There are dozens and dozens of books to help you decide what to plant, and my suggestion is that you strongly consider native plants. Native plants are generally trouble-free in terms of pests and diseases, require little maintenance, and usually get along with natural rainfall once they're established. One of the best sources of information on native plants is Sunset Western Garden Book (ISBN# 0-376-03851-9). Other books of merit include the manual of Woody Landscape Plants by Michael A. Dirr (ISBN# 0-87563-344-7), Right Plant, Right Place by Nicola Ferguson (ISBN# 0-671-52396-1), and Shade and Color with Water-Conserving Plants by James E. Walters and Balbir Backhaus (ISBN# 0-88192-214-5). In these books you'll find color plates, cultural requirements, and loads of ideas for planting your two acres. |
