The rugosas are generally considered the best hip producers, and some roses with rugosa in their parentage will also make largish hips. The rugosas would probably be the best choice for you in this case because they are large and vigorous shrubs. In general roses do best with full sun all day (or at least six hours of sun with noon within those hours), rich, slightly acidic soil that is evenly moist yet well drained, and of course, the less competition for air circulation, sun, water and nutrients the better. When establsihing your roses, try to clear an open area around them to give them a fighting chance, water and mulch them until they become established, and purchase plants grown on their own roots rather than grafted for the best winter hardiness. |
