In my experience, just about every plant that blooms will attract butterflies or moths, but generally speaking the more floriferous the better. You will also find that a plant might be more attractive to certain butterflies than others and that it might be attractive at a certain time of day or at a certain part of the season. If I had to pick just a few, I would suggest butterfly bush (a must), zinnias, nepeta, monarda, aster, purple coneflower, trumpet vine, sedum and chives. I would also plant some parsley to accommodate butterfly larvae.
